Here are a few screenshots and links for samples of my website editorial, production and development work at the UN. Some are websites I developed, others feature web content I wrote and produced:
From 2010-2012, I conceived, worked alongside designers to develop and deploy, then populated and maintained the website for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Regional Office for South America (ACNUDH.org, according to its Spanish acronym). I achieved this with no budget and in just six month’s time.
I worked collaboratively with colleagues on our team to come up with the concept, structure and initial content of UN Women’s Beijing+20 campaign microsite, launched in 2014.[Note: The URL is no longer active.]
A day in the life of…
I developed several new story types and formats in my role as UN Women’s Global Web Editor. This included the “A day in the life of…” series. I interviewed Dina and wrote the inaugural story for this series on her role as Head of Office for UN Women in Yemen.
From where I stand
“From where I stand: Maria Judite da Silva Ballerio” www.unwomen.org. June 13, 2016.
I also developed the “From where I stand” editorial series. I normally edited these stories, but in some cases I also wrote them. See this story I wrote, for which I interviewed Maria Judite in Portuguese, then transcribed and translated it into English and Spanish. I then edited segments to fit the “From where I stand” format for this editorial series that I introduced in early 2016, and wrote the contextual blurb at the end.
In Focus: Violence against Women
One of UN Women’s most popular editorial packages of all-time [as of 2016], receiving nearly 1 million visitors in the first 24 hours, I fully developed the “In Focus: End Violence against Women” page, posted in November 2014. I conceived its structure, writing portions (such as “The Issue” on the main page and intros on all 12 subpages), selecting and integrating content (including news items, statements, infographics, videos, publications, etc.). To make the package more visually appealing, I also sketched 12 icons (which a designer later produced) to illustrate each of the Critical Areas of Concern of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. We used these icons as buttons linking to each respective subpage. This package was also fully translated and produced in Spanish and French.
This package took several months to develop. I worked in close coordination with relevant colleagues in both policy and programme divisions to select the best topics for feature stories on the interconnections for violence against women with each of the Beijing Platform’s Critical Areas of Concern. I also reached out to field colleagues for story ideas. In the end, this In Focus package included 24 feature stories from all regions showcasing results-oriented initiatives to end violence against women. See a few sample subpages:
I produced this comprehensive editorial package on Women and the Sustainable Development Goals in September 2015, with an unprecedented 17 subpages, showcasing how women are specifically affected by the SDGs, and how they can help achieve these global goals. This “In Focus” package contains targeted content, including infographics, speeches, videos, publications, photos and human impact stories. In fact, this collection contains an unprecedented 37 feature stories in total. It remains one of the most popular packages on the UN Women website.
This package was also fully translated and customized in Spanish and French.
