My experience:
I didn’t study computer science, and I am not a web ‘designer’ or ‘developer’. But I have used several content management systems, I know HTML and some CSS and I’ve been posting since 2003.
- I maintained my own professional freelance website as a foreign correspondent from 2003-2007.
- At UN-ECLAC, I posted content to the website using a complex CMS.
- With the UN Human Rights Office, I conceived, structured, worked with student designers, populated and launched a comprehensive multilingual website, with no budget and in just six month’s time.
- At UN Women, I worked with colleagues to come up with the concept, structure and content of the Beijing+20 campaign microsite and helped produce it.
- I posted to the UN Women global website daily and a produced a variety of multi-page editorial packages, which creatively integrate impact stories, infographics and multimedia content.
- In collaboration with two other colleagues, I prepared more than a dozen site audits for UN Women’s regional and national portals.
- During my time as Web Editor, UN Women’s web traffic more than doubled, as did time spent on our pages.
- I built and maintain the website you’re reading now, on WordPress.
An expert web strategist and story-teller, Jen played a lead role in introducing new story types and content formats which contributed to the growth of yearly unique visitors to the global website, and to visitors staying longer. Her excellent results reflect her skill in producing dynamic material rich in visual assets, such as Women and the SDGs, that showcased our work with precision and clarity. We could depend on her for all aspects of production—from research, to drafting, ensuring translation quality, posting content and live webcasts—with absolute efficiency. A thorough professional, in addition to producing new content, she took care to update statistics and other static pages, which others may have overlooked. Friendly, passionate and driven, Jen was a great asset for our team and highly valued by the organization.

I conceived, worked alongside designers, populated and maintained the website for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Regional Office for South America (ACNUDH.org, according to its Spanish acronym). I achieved this with no budget and in just six month’s time.
Beijing+20 campaign website
I worked collaboratively with colleagues on our team to come up with the concept, structure and initial content of UN Women’s Beijing+20 campaign microsite, launched in 2014.
Day in the life of…
I interviewed Dina and wrote this third-person “A day in the life of…” story on her role as Head of Office for UN Women in Yemen. See more stories from the “Day in the life of…” series, which I spearheaded.
From where I stand (series)
I conceived and launched this new editorial series for the UN Women website in early 2016, with more than 20 published by mid-year. Using a first-person editorial approach, these blogs are micro-stories from everyday women around the world to showcase their daily struggles, which illustrate the problems each Sustainable Development Goal seeks to address. These…
From where I stand: Zika awareness in Brazil
I interviewed Maria Judite in Portuguese, then transcribed and translated it into English and Spanish. I then edited segments to fit the “From where I stand” format for this editorial series that I introduced in early 2016, and wrote the contextual blurb at the end. “From where I stand: Maria Judite da Silva Ballerio” www.unwomen.org.…
In Focus: End Violence against Women
One of our most popular editorial packages of all-time, receiving nearly 1 million visitors the first 24 hours, I fully developed this In Focus, conceiving its structure, writing portions (such as “The Issue” on the main page and intros on all 12 subpages), selecting and integrating content (including news items, statements, infographics, videos, publications, etc.).…
In Focus: International Women’s Day
Each year, ahead of International Women’s Day (IWD) on the 8th of March, I would prepare an In Focus page compiling relevant material on that year’s theme and showcasing UN Women’s outreach activities as they take place. It is one of the most popular pages on the website every year. The 2016 IWD compilation featured…
In Focus: Women and the SDGs
I produced this comprehensive editorial package on Women and the Sustainable Development Goals in September 2015, with an unprecedented 17 subpages, showcasing how women are specifically affected by the SDGs, and how they can help achieve these global goals. This “In Focus” package contains targeted content, including infographics, speeches, videos, publications, photos and human impact…
In the words of… (series)
In early 2013, I spearheaded the “In the words of…” editorial series, which features first-person accounts by UN Women partners or beneficiaries detailing specific gender-based problems, what’s being done to address them, and how change is underway.
